STRAWBERRY
A one-act stage play written by Kerry Drumm
Status: Available for licensing and further production
About the play
Strawberry is a one-act stage play about a teenage girl forced to question family, identity, and where home truly belongs after a long-held secret is exposed.
When fifteen-year-old Tabs spends the summer with the mother who left when she was a baby, she hopes to find answers about who she is and where she comes from. But the truth she uncovers threatens the one relationship that has always anchored her: the bond with Adam, the man who raised her as his daughter.
Intimate, character-driven and emotionally restrained, Strawberry explores unconditional love, chosen family, silence, and the painful difference between blood and belonging. At its heart, the play asks whether home is defined by where we come from, or by the people who stay.
Why this story
Strawberry came from an interest in the quiet pressures that exist inside families, the things left unsaid, the truths carried for too long, and the emotional cost of trying to protect someone from pain.
I wanted to write something small and contained that still carried real weight, allowing character, silence and subtext to do the work. At the centre of the play is a teenage girl trying to understand who she is, and a father-daughter bond tested by a truth that changes everything and nothing at the same time.
The play sits alongside my wider interest in family, working-class experience, care, responsibility and belonging, particularly the idea that home is not always defined by blood, but by the people who stay.
World Premiere

Strawberry had its world premiere at Williamstown Little Theatre, running for 16 performances from 4–21 September.
Directed by Shirley Sydenham, the production featured Tamar Collier, Liam O’Kane and Maxine Palmerson.
The play was nominated for a VDL Award, with Maxine Palmerson also nominated for Lead Actress as Tabs at the WLT Cordell Awards.
